Exploring scenarios of Villasimius sea

Villasimius is a bright example about how tourism economy can help to improve an ecological awareness about the natural development of the ecosystems .

Fifteen years apart from foundation of Marine Protected Area of Capo Carbonara, Villasimius is nowadays one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sardinia.

The reserve extends from Capo Boi to the area in front of the Serpentara Island and has 136 flora species surveyed.

All species of fish in the Mediterranean appear to meet up in this extraordinary stretch of coast. Here it is possible to see large fishes such as amberjack and leccie step, schools of barracuda, dolphins and, for the lucky ones, some sea turtles and monk seals.

This area is a paradise for snorkelling and diving, both for the host of colorful fishes swimming even near the shore and for the shipwrecks lying in the depths and ranging from ancient Roman galleys to modern cargo .

Ten feet deep under the shoal waters of Santa Caterina, Virgin Mary of Castaway welcomes visitors of underwater sceneries.

These depths, so treacherous for ships of all ages, are attractive from the point of view of the morphology of the coast: here granite rocks rising from the bottom form pinnacles and potholes, cracks and ramparts, between sea daisies and gorgonians.

In addition to the preservation of natural heritage, the marine area has been able to promote, over time, enhancement and sustainable development of the region: the formation of environmental awareness among the local population sensitized tourist to respect the environment.
